GRAPHISOFT supports future BIM professionals

The winners of the GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018 student competition


MOSCOW, December 17, 2018 - GRAPHISOFT®, the leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) software developer for architects and designers, has announced the winners of the all-Russia GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018 student competition. This competition for the best projects using building information modeling technologies aims to support architectural and construction universities in the education of future professionals.

More than 90 projects were submitted to the competition. The most active in the number of submitted works were the Academy of Construction and Architecture (Simferopol), southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don) and Samara State Technical University. The criteria for the selection of the three finalists were the level of architecture and graphic presentation, as well as the effective use of GRAPHISOFT BIM tools, based on the principles of building information modeling. The jury paid close attention to the quality and detail level of the building models.

The competition shortlist included 16 projects. Three winning projects received the highest marks in architecture and were chosen unanimously. Two of the three projects were the leaders in the BIM files evaluation, but the third project was mired in controversy. Two contenders for third place received high marks. One project was praised for its architecture and the other for the file, and the difference in final scores was only 1 point. Therefore, the jury decided to award a special prize in the "Residential" category for "17-story residential building" designed by Ekaterina Chernyshova.

The best BIM project in the Apartment Building category

What attracted you to the competition?

I found out about this competition quite by accident, and I was immediately interested in it! First, ARCHICAD is a unique program that is gaining popularity in Eastern Siberia. The BIM technologies implementation in Russia has persuaded many architectural practices to switch to ARCHICAD. I am very happy about this, because I have been working with this program for more than five years, since the beginning of my university studies. In addition, I was interested in the competition terms, especially the project file evaluation. I was curious how my use of ARCHICAD would be evaluated by a jury.

What are the main advantages of ARCHICAD from your point of view?

One of the main advantages of the program is its clear structure and intuitiveness. Simple interface, unlimited possibilities in creating a full project documentation from scratch, integration with almost all kinds of files, calculation, modeling, rendering -- and all this in one program! I especially appreciate the fact that the design process takes place simultaneously in 2D and 3D: to develop layouts and at the same time to "sculpt" architecture -- this combination is easy to achieve with ARCHICAD! The connection of all drawings with the model is invaluable, because the architecture is created through many iterations, each of which is worth the time!

What favorite ARCHICAD tools were actively used to create the competitive project? What problems can you solve with them?

It’s great that with each new version, ARCHICAD becomes more convenient, modern and progressive. This is especially noticeable in the latest versions when working with stairs and morphs. Also enjoyable was the white model option during the modeling process. Many thanks to the organizers for the opportunity to participate in this competition!

Jury's comment

The attention is immediately drawn to the project visualization -- it's not standard renderings, but rather an artistic way of presenting images. The project is very detailed: the author has done a lot of research, offering her system of layouts for categories of different types. All views of the project (floor plans, elevations and images) are selected and arranged very carefully. The project file is also carefully worked out -- the model has a lot of details and the author can use all the ARCHICAD tools. The only advice that could be given to the author is to pay more attention to the information component of the project.

What attracted you to the competition?

First, the relevance of the BIM design topic. This approach is now mandatory. The competition encourages people to build their model professionally. In the educational process, the correctness of the model is not tracked; it is up to the student’s conscience and we hand in only printed boards. And here was the opportunity to demonstrate the skill of proper modeling, to show all the responsibility with which you approach the work – and I'm glad that my project was highly appreciated. Thanks to the BIM PROJECT competition to unlock its potential, this is the biggest incentive!

What are the main advantages of ARCHICAD from your point of view?

GRAPHISOFT does a lot to ensure that students know and love the ARCHICAD environment, to help them to enjoy this environment. Training videos on the official GRAPHISOFT Russia channel, active groups in social networks, lectures at universities, webinars, competitions, free educational version – I do not know any other design software where the developers are so interested in the students’ knowledge. There are many programs with which ARCHICAD can work in a "live" bundle -- including Grasshopper and Lumion. The development of the BIMx Hyper-model allows us to convey details and without extra effort to the teacher. I took this opportunity to effectively demonstrate the project with the help of virtual reality glasses.

What favorite ARCHICAD tools were actively used to create the competitive project? What problems can you solve with them?

It is important to emphasise that I always work in the current version of the program, so all the advantages of ARCHICAD 22 were used – for example, the Complex Profile editor and Spherical Panoramic visualisation.
The project has a lot of exploded views, and this helped me with many functions, such as Graphic Override, 3D Cutaway and 3D Document, after which I only needed to save the view. It may sound complicated, but it's actually quite simple and fast. Exploded-view images make your project much clearer to anyone, so they are popular, and it is important to know how to approach the process of creating such views. Accurate work in the project Navigator and counting everything through the schedules – here without comments, the accurate organization of work – is a very important point in the design.
The site (exported to SketсhUp from Google Earth and then to ARCHICAD via script) was added via text file as a mesh. Visualization was created using CineRender (post-production in Adobe Photoshop). ARCHICAD for me is a universal program that helps to implement all my ideas and solve the problems that the student-architect faces every day!

Jury's comment

It is obvious that the author has her own style of presenting. The project is worked out in detail -- you can find a personal story with the characters and schemes, and a small analysis of the site. The project file is one of the highest quality among those submitted to the competition. You could even say that it is the reference project. The structure is clearly visible in the file: in the View Map all Views are stored in separate folders; each of the Views has qualitative settings of the View Settings. For example, the author used not only Layer Combinations, but also her own Layers naming system. Almost everything we see on the sheets is created in ARCHICAD.

The best BIM project in the Public Building category

What attracted you to the competition?

First of all, it is an opportunity to prove yourself when working with such a modern approach to design as BIM, as well as to receive professional criticism from leading experts in the field. I was also attracted to the opportunity to compare my approach with the others.

What are the main advantages of ARCHICAD from your point of view?

The main advantage of ARCHICAD is the active interaction between all components of the project and volumetric design. Also, I cannot fail to note a wide range of automation -- from concept to documentation -- which allows you to free up resources for solving design tasks.

What favorite ARCHICAD tools were actively used to create the competitive project? What problems can you solve with them?

Hotlink Modules were actively used in the competition project. Due to the large number of duplicate elements, the detail of each of them was developed to the maximum level, and it was this function that allowed me to do this.
My other favorite tool, Graphic Override, significantly reduces the project design time. With its help, it is convenient to create various design drawings and diagrams of the project. The use of 3D Cutaways helped to create a 3D image, and then display it as a vector drawing.
And of course, the 3D Document feature! The creation of 3D views (exploded-view images) helped to demonstrate in detail the design solutions, and the layout of axonometric floor diagrams in the form of a 3D Document allowed me to demonstrate all the functional blocks and elements.

Jury's comment

The project was one of the first to be uploaded to the competition web site and immediately attracted attention for its detailed study and submission. The author managed not only to create a beautiful "picture," but also to make a very informative project, having worked through all the volumes of buildings. The file is made very carefully, with its own structure in the Navigator Panel and the use of Hotlink Modules. With the help of standard ARCHICAD tools and functions, the author managed to obtain excellent graphics based on the model.
